The Birmingham Barons of the Southern League ended the 1987 season with a record of 68 wins and 75 losses, finishing third in the league's West Division.

The Barons scored 662 runs and yielded 736 runs, most in the circuit. Rondal Rollin walloped 39 home runs for Birmingham, and Jim O'Dell added 15 or more, too. Rondal Rollin drove in 106 runs. Marlin McPhail paced all qualifying hitters on the roster by connecting at a .290 clip. Adam Peterson topped the squad with 12 wins and a team-best 3.91 ERA, best among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.
