The Cedar Rapids Kernels of the Midwest League ended the 1996 season with a record of 63 wins and 72 losses, finishing fourth in the league's West Division.

The Kernels scored 645 runs and conceded 657 runs. Larry Barnes paced Cedar Rapids with 27 home runs, and Jon VanderGriend walloped 15 or more also. Larry Barnes drove in 112 runs and topped all qualifying hitters on the roster with a .317 average. Jose Cintron and Brian Scutero led the squad with 10 wins each, while Jose Cintron recorded a 3.89 ERA, tops among qualifying pitchers.
