The High Desert Mavericks of the California League ended the 1996 season with a record of 76 wins and 64 losses, finishing first in the league's South Division.

The Mavericks scored 924 runs and allowed 881 runs. Chris Kirgan walloped 35 home runs for High Desert, and Bryan Bogle added 15 or more, too. Chris Kirgan drove in 131 runs. Mike Berry led batters with significant playing time with a .361 average. Greg Dean topped the squad with 10 wins, while Joey Rhodes recorded a 5.12 ERA, tops among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.
