The High Desert Mavericks of the California League ended the 1998 season with a record of 82 wins and 58 losses, finishing second in the league's Valley Division.

The Mavericks tallied 779 runs and yielded 676 runs. Rod Barajas paced High Desert with 23 home runs, while Kevin Clark and Jarrod Patterson walloped 15 or more, too. Jarrod Patterson accounted for 102 RBI and topped all regular batters with a .335 average. Brad Penny led the team with 14 wins, and John Patterson registered a 2.83 earned run average, leading regular hurlers.
