The Lethbridge Black Diamonds of the Pioneer League ended the 1996 season with a record of 50 wins and 22 losses, finishing first in the league's North Division.

The Black Diamonds plated 637 runs, tops in the circuit. Lethbridge gave up 339 runs, the lowest total in the circuit. David Hayman paced the team with 17 home runs, and Ron Hartman walloped 15 or more, too. Ron Hartman and Kevin Sweeney each recorded 72 runs batted in. Kevin Sweeney led batters with significant playing time by hitting .424. Vladimir Núñez topped the squad with 10 wins and a team-best 2.22 earned run average, leading qualifying pitchers.
