The Portsmouth Merrimacks of the Piedmont League ended the 1954 season with a record of 71 wins and 69 losses, finishing fourth in the PL.

The Merrimacks scored 634 runs, worst in the league, and gave up 709 runs. John Russo led all regular hitters with a .279 average. Jim Barnhardt topped Portsmouth with 15 wins, while Lloyd Carden recorded a 2.42 ERA, tops among hurlers with significant time on the mound.
