The Peninsula Pilots of the Carolina League ended the 1978 season with a record of 90 wins and 49 losses, finishing first in the CL.

The Pilots scored 704 runs, most in the league. Peninsula gave up 469 runs, the lowest total in the circuit. Ozzie Virgil led the squad with 29 home runs, and Nicholas Popovich walloped 15 or more also. Ozzie Virgil drove in 98 runs. George Vukovich paced all regular batters by hitting .311. Henry Mack and Marty Bystrom topped the team with 15 wins each, while Jose Martinez recorded a 2.07 ERA, tops among regular hurlers.

Jerry Reed, Bob Walk, Cliff Speck, Marty Bystrom, Ozzie Virgil, George Vukovich and Jay Loviglio were all players from the 1978 Peninsula Pilots who played in the Majors during their careers.
