The Virginia Generals of the Carolina League ended the 1988 season with a record of 41 wins and 99 losses, finishing fourth in the league's South Division.

The Generals scored 511 runs, worst in the league, and surrendered 834 runs, most in the circuit. Deric Ladnier led Virginia with 10 home runs John Joslyn drove in 58 runs and topped hitters with significant playing time by connecting at a .266 clip. Tony Metoyer paced the team with 7 wins and a team-best 4.07 ERA, best among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.

Stu Cole and Brian Dubois both played in Major League Baseball during their careers.

Joe Breeden served as manager.
