Originally called Elmwood Park when built in 1895. A WPA $35,000 grant built permanent concrete bleachers in 1938. Temporary lights brought night games in 1949. Permanent lights were installed in 1959. The park is named for John S. MacKenzie who won the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1917 for saving 80 shipmates by holding a loose depth charge until calmer waters enabled him to re-lash the charge to the ship.
