The Decatur Commodores of the Midwest League ended the 1972 season with a record of 48 wins and 79 losses, finishing fifth in the league's South Division.

The Commodores scored 504 runs and allowed 562 runs. Richard Guerra led Decatur with 21 home runs and accounted for 68 RBI. Steve Stroughter paced hitters with significant playing time by connecting at a .285 clip. Kenneth Kollmyer topped the squad with 12 wins and a team-best 2.83 earned run average, tops among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.

Steve Stroughter, Greg Thayer, Doug Capilla, Mike Eden, Jim McKnight, Butch Metzger and Ed Halicki were all players from the 1972 Decatur Commodores who played in the Majors during their careers.
