The Knoxville Smokies of the South Atlantic League ended the 1961 season with a record of 75 wins and 64 losses, finishing second in the SAL.

The Smokies scored 700 runs and yielded 616 runs. Jesse Queen led Knoxville with 17 home runs and drove in 83 runs. Bill Roman and Jesse Queen paced batters with significant playing time by connecting at a .308 clip. Willie Smith topped the squad with 13 wins, while Phillip Kliewer registered a 2.23 earned run average, best among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.
