The Modesto Reds of the California League ended the 1972 season with a record of 76 wins and 63 losses, finishing second in the CL.

The Reds scored 773 runs and yielded 685 runs. Héctor Cruz and Ed Kurpiel led Modesto with 22 home runs apiece., while Doug Clark walloped 15 or more, too. Ed Kurpiel drove in 91 runs. Doug Clark paced hitters with significant playing time with a .275 average. Gary Marks topped the squad with 13 wins, and Larry Volkening registered a 2.74 earned run average, best among pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.

Mike Vail, Marc Hill, Jim Dwyer, John Andrews, Héctor Cruz, Mike Proly and John Denny were all players from the 1972 Modesto Reds who played in the Majors during their careers.
