Opened July 3, 1923, The Field was named for owner George Muehlebach. It was built on the location of a frog pond and ash heap. The facility was a bowl; fans entered the top of the stadium at ground level. RF was 450 feet, with a 60-foot high wall. When the park became Ruppert Stadium in 1937, a 12-foot fence in the outfield lessened the vast home run distances. The catcher faced NE. Muehlebach Field was built for $400,000, and underwent a $2.5 million 1954-1955 renovation to accommodate major league baseball.
