The Asheville Tourists of the Western Carolinas League ended the 1978 season with a record of 73 wins and 67 losses, finishing third in the WCL.

The Tourists plated 697 runs and allowed 642 runs. James Barbe paced Asheville with 18 home runs and drove in 99 runs. Ronald Carney led batters with significant playing time by connecting at a .300 clip. John Butcher and Charles Lamson topped the squad with 10 wins each, while Ed Lynch earned a 3.29 ERA, leading hurlers with significant time on the mound.

John Butcher, Bob Johnson, Mark Mercer, George Wright, Ed Lynch, Wayne Tolleson and Len Whitehouse were all players from the 1978 Asheville Tourists who played in the Majors during their careers.

Wayne Terwilliger served as manager.
