The Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League ended the 1981 season with a record of 74 wins and 68 losses, finishing second in the league's North Division.

The Tourists scored 773 runs and yielded 666 runs. Dan Murphy led Asheville with 18 home runs, while George Gomez and Tom Dunbar walloped 15 or more also. Dan Murphy drove in 88 runs and topped all qualifying hitters on the roster by connecting at a .369 clip. Dar Smith paced the team with 16 wins and a team-best 2.76 ERA, best among regularly-used pitchers.

Dwayne Henry, Billy Taylor, Dar Smith, Greg Tabor, Tom Dunbar, Curt Wilkerson, Tom Henke and Mike Mason were all players from the 1981 Asheville Tourists who played in the Majors during their careers.

Tom Robson served as manager.
