The Charleston RiverDogs of the South Atlantic League ended the 1996 season with a record of 63 wins and 78 losses, finishing fourth in the league's Central Division.

The RiverDogs scored 533 runs, worst in the league, and gave up 649 runs. Rubén Mateo drove in 58 runs and topped all qualifying hitters on the roster with a .260 average. Scott Mudd led the squad with 12 wins, while Danny Kolb recorded a 2.57 ERA, best among hurlers with significant time on the mound.

Mike Venafro, Ryan Glynn, Ryan Dempster, Rubén Mateo, Craig Monroe, Cliff Brumbaugh and Danny Kolb were all players from the 1996 Charleston RiverDogs who played in the Majors during their careers.
