The Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League ended the 1986 season with a record of 90 wins and 50 losses, finishing first in the league's North Division.

The Tourists led the league with 870 runs, sparked by 127 home runs. Asheville allowed 622 runs. Cameron Drew paced the team with 26 home runs, and Rich Johnson walloped 15 or more, too. Cameron Drew drove in 117 runs and topped all regular hitters by connecting at a .326 clip. Todd Credeur paced the squad with 13 wins, while Blaise Ilsley recorded a 1.95 ERA, best among qualifying pitchers.

Blaise Ilsley, Terry Wells, Mel Stottlemyre, Dan Walters, Cameron Drew, Jeff Baldwin and Dave Meads were all players from the 1986 Asheville Tourists who played in the Majors during their careers.
