The Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League ended the 1987 season with a record of 91 wins and 48 losses, finishing first in the league's North Division.

The Tourists plated 809 runs, tops in the circuit. Asheville conceded 587 runs. Mike Simms walloped 39 home runs for the team, and Ed Whited added 15 or more as well. Ed Whited recorded 126 runs batted in and topped hitters with significant playing time by connecting at a .323 clip. Guy Normand led the team with 16 wins, while Sam August recorded a 1.72 ERA, leading pitchers with enough qualifying appearances.

Trent Hubbard, Ryan Bowen, Lou Frazier, Karl Rhodes, Al Osuna, Mike Simms, Ed Whited and Craig Biggio were all players from the 1987 Asheville Tourists who played in the Majors during their careers.
