Opened April 15, 1930, Joe Engel Stadium was built on the site of 20-year-old Andrews Stadium. It was constructed of bricks and steel. A 1951 map shows the grandstand with a steel and concrete floor, a steel frame, steel posts, and a wood roof. Ticket offices, club houses, and the umpire's room were under the grandstand. A five-foot incline in deep CF led up to a terrace providing the outfielders with a sense of adventure. A chain link fence was built to reduce the home run distances, and outfielders no longer had to negotiate the terrace. Historic Engel Field was renovated in 1986, and received a major $2 million facelift in 1989-1990. The catcher faces ENE.
